Yes, boss!
Once again, in this I have been fortunate. I haven't had a poor experience with any medical director that I've had the pleasure of working with. Nevertheless, there does exist an unspoken and unwritten rule of maintaining decorum that I can't explain. Perhaps I've just gotten used to respecting my senior consultants in general.
Remarkably, I've noticed the same about myself when it comes to pretty much anything. I have a strong sense of honor and respect to those who have bla...

The Digital Age... Humbug!
Believe me, I've tried. The phenomenon is not exclusive to medical books (though I do feel it is particularly true with them). I just can't read books off tablet computers. There are exceptions though. I can read comics just fine! And books that were made specifically with their digital aspect in mind seem to do okay. But academic textbooks, novels that were traditional then translated to an e-book, and magazines don't seem to do so well with me. It may be ...

A Positive Twist
We were taught pretty early on that as doctors we need to gain patients' trust to get the best and most relevant information out of them in order to help them appropriately. It seemed easy enough at first but after a few patients one begins to realize just how difficult it can be sometimes. No two patients are the same. I've gone as far as acting like a clown to get a patient to like me (not that it wasn't fun, because it was).
Of course, every now and then we have t...

Looks like another year has passed and it's
Dialogue Free Comics Day once more! Organized annually by

"Too often, when writing webcomics I forget that this is
primarily a visual artform and so to emphasise that, I’ve set myself the challenge of posting a dialogue free comic on that day..."
I've contributed every year so far and yet it's still hard to kick the...

This hilarious comic strip is by T. Andrew Dempsey, the heart and soul of the webcomic,
My Life in the Trenches!
Tim asked me if he could have Rianne guest in his comic as a doctor again, and I was more than happy to oblige! Tim is one artist I know who
gets the good doctor. In this comic, it particularly shows in her prolonged interjection, "Dear Mother-of-Pearl!"

This comic page was my contribution to the
Indies Maximus anthology/sampler comic book given out last Free Comic Book Day. It's significant in several ways. One of the most striking is the fact that it's a longform page, something I'm not used to doing. It's also a return to Black & White, as the book was printed as such. Furthermore, the panels were hand-drawn! In a way, all the back-to-basics was a welcome change from the ever-growing digital aspect of the production of

Posted by Carlo Jose San Juan, MD on Sunday, January 2, 2011,
This guest comic is by Teddy Pavon, artist of the online comic series,
Work in Progress!
I first met Teddy during the
2010 Metro Comic Con, where he and
Work in Progress writer, Hub Pacheco, were going around the event floor handing out free copies of their series' introductory chapter. I once again met the duo at
Komikon 2010 when they released the printed first chapter of their comic (which I was fortunate to get a copy of as I heard they sold out fast).
Work in Progress is the story of Eli,...
