Guest Comic / Art!

January 15, 2011

Celebrate the big FIFTEEN: One of the features of the Callous Comics website is the Guest Art/Comics page.  I've been extremely blessed to receive great entries from some of the most fantastic comic creators and artists!

I usually put out the call for guest work when I'm expecting down time from producing comics but this year is different.  As you might know, Callous Comics is celebrating it's fifteenth anniversary on August 7, 2011!  To help celebrate this grand occasion, I'll be opening the site to guest work for a couple of weeks leading up to the big date!  These will be published alongside my own!  If you're interested in joining this big art party, the details will be posted at the bottom of this blog post.

Callous Comics Day: You may have noticed on the Guest Art/Comics page that I do a lot of guest work too!  And if you look closely, by some freakish twist of fate, several of my guest spots got published on the same day!  So, on July 19, 2011, I'm hoping to have at least ten (10!) guest comics done, provided they all get published on that day.  If you'd like me to make a guest comic for your webcomic series, just e-mail me HERE!

Guest Art / Comic Details:
  • Please keep things Callous-related!  Your guest artwork or comic strip should feature at least one recurring character from the Callous comic series.  If you have your own comic series and would like to feature your characters in the guest artwork/strip, feel free to do so!
  • Your submitted comic strip will be published at a 850 pixel width, regardless of the height, at 72 dpi.  Please adjust your lettering or font sizes with this in mind so that text or dialogue in your comics would remain legible.  Other artwork will be published at varying sizes depending on content at 72 dpi.
  • Please submit your images in JPEG or PNG format.
  • I work really hard to maintain Callous as an all-ages comic strip.  Please keep things G-rated! I'll accept any PG-7 material and some PG-13 depending on the content.  As for being funny?  Of course, it's better that way, but feel free to be expressive with your comic strip within these boundaries, funny or not.
  • Publishing time will be on the two weeks leading up to August 7, 2011.
  • If you have any questions, you can post them as a comment here or send me a wall post, direct message, or private message in the following venues:
  • You can send your finished art/comics as an e-mail attachment to caz@callouscomics.com!
  • By sending a submission, you, the artist, agree to have your guest art and/or comic to be posted on callouscomics.com as well as its retention in the archives and to have a thumbnail image taken from it for use on the Guest Art / Comics page.  All copyrights to the submitted art/image remain with the artist.  However, all Callous-related characters and settings remain the copyright of Carlo Jose San Juan. The guest art / comic would not be reproduced in any printed material unless given permission by the submitting artist.
  • I would love to promote you and your respective comic and/or art website!  If I don't know you personally or have not corresponded with you before, please write a little something about yourself.  If you have a comic or any art-related site, please include your site's URL, a description, and a standard banner image for promoting your site.

Callous Comics at "Feeding the Doves" Exhibit

January 12, 2011

"Feeding the Doves" exhibit poster (left) and Callous: Chocolate Chip Wishes and Caffeine Dreams cover (right)

On January 17, 2011, there will be an exhibit in the Philippine Heart Center lobby where Dr. Orestes Monzon will be showing his fantastic photographs next to painted interpretations/reimaginations of them by the amazing Angelito "Jo" Fernando.  It's sure to be an exciting and interesting display of different expressions of the same subject.

Furthermore, I'll be there to sign and sell c...

My (AWESOME) Birthday Gift

December 23, 2010

I love December.  This month, the humid heat of this little nook in the tropics I call my home gives way to a nice, cool breeze.  Even as you walk down the street there seem to be a lot more happy faces than usual.  It's a great time to be in my part of the world!

December, as you all know, is where the holiday season reaches the peak of it's soaring crescendo.  You see, in the Philippines, the build-up toward Christmas begins in September.  It's that big of a deal here and the festivities are...

Ambush

December 16, 2010
I made this sketch last September because I had hoped to offer it to Ambush's creator in person.  However, such an opportunity hasn't arrived so I figured I'd post it here. :)

Anyways, this is a drawing of mine featuring Amber, the heroine of a popular local comic strip series called Ambush.  I stylized her a bit, giving her different sunglasses and all.  I don't draw guns very often hence the ridiculous looking pistol.  Still, the comic is a fun romp through various action-filled adventures a...

Cal Duck Pendant!

November 29, 2010

The great Rommel Estanislao, Philippine indie comic star and brilliant sculptor, was gracious enough to make this fantastic Cal Duck pendant for me!  Isn't it AWESOME?!  Thanks Sir Omeng!

Before you ask me if I'm planning to mass produce these... not just yet. I don't feel that there's enough demand to invest in such an endeavor yet.  But I may commission him to do full bodied figures of Rianne and Cal one day (when I can afford him).

Check out more of his work at his Deviantart page and Multip...

Art: Ahsoka Tano

November 22, 2010

In a recent episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars (entitled "Heroes on Both Sides"), Lucasfilm unveiled some new CGI character models of some key characters.  Most notable of which, at least in my opinion, was Ahsoka Tano who appeared to have aged somewhat and now exudes a more mature aura about her.  Ahsoka by far is my favorite character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars not only due to the mystery of her eventual fate (because of the feature films, we pretty much know what happens to most of the...

My 2010 Komikon Experience: Whoa!

November 17, 2010
Earlier this year I sat behind a table at the 2010 Metro Comic Con.  That was my first comic con whether as an artist or as a fan and it was an absolutely wonderful experience.  The one problem with being behind a table is, well, being behind it during the whole event.  I didn't get to walk around as much as I wanted to.  Nevertheless, it opened my eyes to the wealth of talent in the local indie comic scene.

Last weekend, the much-awaited Komikon 2010 took place.  As much as I wanted to partic...

Schedule for the rest of 2010

September 21, 2010

Comics update schedule:
As the year is fast approaching its end, my need to concentrate on non-comic matters have increased.  So with great reluctance, I have to put Callous on yet another break.  From September 23, 2010 until October 17, 2010 I cannot produce any new Callous comics.  Then from October 18, 2010 until October 31, 2010, I'll be updating twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays).  Then from November 1, 2010 until January 9, 2011, I'll be updating only once a week (probably Sundays). ...

Coco Komodo and a Reformed Muscovy Duck

September 7, 2010

I was faced with the task of redesigning Muscovy Duck after the events of The Land of the Guardians.  Will I bring his old spikey hair back or keep his DBZ-style 'do?  In the end, I supposed it would have been more feasible to have his last-seen features intact, including the clawed feet.  I did, however, give him his flowered Guardian Duck T-shirt back.  He's still in his green robe, only it is open and sans belt.  I'm currently writing his return in a new storyline which includes bringing b...
